Adult Custody is one of four divisions of BC Corrections and is responsible for the care of approximately 2,800 male and female inmates throughout BC. Adult Custody Division operates correctional centres with various levels of security and control for individuals awaiting trial or serving a provincial custody sentence. The division provides custodial supervision for adults sentenced to incarceration and those remanded to custody. Correctional programs address thought patterns, behaviour and lifestyles that are known to contribute to crime. It provides core programs and additional services which balance risks and needs; ensures linkage with Community Corrections based on common core programming and integrated case management; communicates with stakeholders and participates as a pro-active partner in the criminal justice system. The warden is accountable for the overall management and operation of the correctional centre providing visible, constructive and engaging leadership. The warden is responsible and accountable for the levels, quality and range of security, services, programmes and care provided to those persons held in custody in the centre. The warden operates in an environment of decision-making autonomy and independence regarding the operations of the centre, and with respect to the kinds and quality of security and programme activities, their scope and the levels of service(s) provided to inmates. The warden makes timely decisions designed to preserve the security of the operation, thereby protecting against extreme threat to the life, health and safety of inmates, staff and the public. A major challenge for the position is stimulating a positive labour relations climate in the centre and the development and implementation of local and provincial policies and standard operating procedures for offenders. The position leads province-wide projects, initiatives, innovative programs and operational issues on behalf of the Branch that contribute to the quality and efficiency of correctional centre management in B.C. The position is responsible for the centre’s budget. The warden must be prepared to be exposed to direct and very personal public scrutiny, sometimes over a protracted time frame. A major challenge for the position is stimulating a positive labour relations climate in the centre and the development and implementation of local and provincial policies and standard operating procedures for offenders. The position leads province-wide projects, initiatives, innovative programs and operational issues on behalf of the Branch that contribute to the quality and efficiency of correctional centre management in B.C. The position is responsible for the centre’s budget. The warden must be prepared to be exposed to direct and very personal public scrutiny, sometimes over a protracted time frame.
