ONCE THIS POSITION IS FILLED, YOUR SCORE IS NO LONGER VALID. + Full-time employment + Week 1: (Mon - Fri) 7:00am - 3:30pm, Week 2: (Mon): OFF; (Tues - Fri): 7:00am - 4:15pm DESCRIPTION OF WORK This position assists with rural and community forestry, forest management, forest pest management, and forest fire protection. This position plans and executes the Rural and Community Forestry (RCF) program to private woodland owners; makes woodland examinations to collect data on timber and wildlife resources, prepares written management recommendations for woodlot improvement, timber sales, wildlife habitat, and fuel wood management; makes examinations of possible tree planting areas and recommends site preparation techniques, species to plant, and plantation management practices; presents education programs on forestry and related resource topics to citizens groups, service clubs, schools, and other organizations; provides technical assistance to individuals and municipalities dealing with forest and tree health issues by investigating insect and disease problems of shade, street and ornamental trees; gives assistance to sawmill and logging operators; and uses GIS software and FIMS to produce maps. Duties also include assisting with insect and disease suppression activities, surveillance flights, ground checking, and herbicide applications; assisting with the district's forest fire prevention, pre-suppression, suppression, and mop-up activities; developing and executing prescribed burn plans; assisting with all search and rescue activities; and serving as the district's Safety Coordinator. Essential Functions: 1. Operate motor vehicle to travel to various work sites to perform assigned duties which requires a valid Pennsylvania Class C driver's license. 2. Frequently traverse steep, rough, and uneven terrain over long distances under varying climatic conditions sometimes carrying up to 40lbs of material. 3. Accurately collect forest data with forestry tools, and use silviculture, dendrology, and forest ecology principals to determine proper treatments. 4. Prepare and present educational information programs on forestry, or related topics, to groups, schools, or other organizations. 5. Read, write, understand, and interpret technical forestry material and use GPS and GIS technology and Microsoft software effectively. 6. Correctly identify tree species, vegetation, and forest insects/diseases common to Pennsylvania and NE U.S. and recommend proper treatments. 7. Cooperate with and give assistance to other state and federal agencies and help administer cost-share programs. 8. Communicate clearly with associates in both oral and written format and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public. 9. Participate in all aspects of forest fire suppression and prevention activities, as assigned, including prescribe burns. 10. Learn, apply, and communicate Commonwealth and Bureau of Forestry rules, policies, and procedures, and observe safety and health requirements.
