Job Summary

zyBooks is looking for a Software Engineer to join our development team. You will be a key player in developing architecture and applications that are robust and scalable to meet rapidly expanding numbers of students on our platform.

The ideal candidate will have professional experience working within a modern Javascript web framework like React, Vue, Angular, or EmberJS. Additionally, familiarity with API development, hosting, and backend solutions for SaaS products. Our stack is Ember + Flask orchestrated on Kubernetes; you don't need to be an expert on those - we'll help you get up to speed given the right background and fundamentals.

About the Role

  • Full stack development - from UI implementation to database schema architecture.
  • Work with a team of developers, product managers, developers, and QA to deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Work independently as necessary but able to solicit support when appropriate.
  • Translate higher level ideas and requirements into technical specifications and an implementation.
  • Write efficient, effective, scalable code.
  • Work with authors to develop new content tools.
  • Develop new tooling for authors to build their own content and facilitate release management.

About You

  • Be able to own a product from inception to delivery.
  • Familiarity with modern SaaS product architectures.
  • Knowledge of MySQL or similar relational databases. Ability to write efficient, optimized queries of intermediate complexity.
  • Experience with a modern JavaScript framework like React, Vue, Ember, or Angular.
  • Knowledge of JQuery / vanilla JS.
  • Strong programming skills - object oriented design, API design and implementation, etc.
  • Networking basics: TCP/IP, HTTP, etc.
  • Knowledge of common web services such as CDNs, cloud storage, load balancers, etc. (AWS, GCE, Azure, etc).
  • 2+ years of software engineering work experience
  • 2+ years of experience with the following languages: Javascript, Python, and MySQL
  • Strong sense of product and user experience.
  • Knowledge of web accessibility guidelines. Specifically WCAG 2.0 AA compliance.
